After wasting money on 3 name brand solar chargers with low Jule count I went with this and cows don’t go neer the fence …. Low juele solar chargers are worthless maybe some of the very expensive solars work idk but I spent $400 on 3 different chargers cows walk through them no zap ! 12v systems with 3-6 joules workI was looking for a DC charger that would keep the deer out of my garden. I have no AC power in that area. Before I purchased this charger I had tried several others but they were to weak. This one looked to have the power but had complaints about moisture and corrosion on the internal electronics. I ordered two chargers and when they arrived I noted that they had good strong cases. To guard against internal moisture I took some form-a-gasket used for autos and sealed the seams on the case as shown in the photo. I did not open the case. I just ran a bead and used my finger to spread it for coverage. I am on my second year and have had no issues with ether charger. I do have them simi covered from direct rain but they can get some moisture on them. They give a strong jolt and I have had no issues with deer in my gardens. I would buy again.I use the fiberglass electric fence rods from Tractor Supply to run the wire for the fence. For the battery I purchased a Marine/RV for power. They can be discharged further down that a normal car battery without harm.I purchased this fence charger to use on a fence around my beehives. I do have bears that wander around on occasion. I am using a retired 12volt battery from my pickup and it will handle this charger for a week at least. Surprising how slowly it drains this large vehicle battery. I mounted the charger on an upright 2x4 in a plastic storage tub so that I can install the charger outdoors. No problem with weather, but then I have not really tested its weather resistance. Overall this has been a great purchase. The one I purchased is for keeping bears out of my Bee yard. It would Bee really nice if it had an off switch. When I'm working in the yard I shut the old one off so I wouldn't get busy and back into it, doing so will wake you up.This one is better sealed against moisture than the old one, same brand.Simple used on solar. Just what I wanted created my own solar battery bank for this chargerUsed for electric fence.weather proofed good customer service east install but I can’t get my wall electric fence 100 ft fence to charge over 3.5. Sin it dried and got rainy the charge ,as been low.Moisture killed her, but its under warranty. The charger sits on a south facing poll, just under the solar panel and above the battery tray (single old cheap 12v from 'that w store'). I check it almost every feeding time, didn't work the last couple of days - but almost no sun for 3 days and lots of rain. Today it wasn't working still, battery shows full, so got to tinkering with it and got some water out of the cord that goes into the unit. I figure it has soaked up water after this long.Because I have one stupid and stubborn horse I quick ordered another, so will have one on the shelf (hopefully before she figures out the wire is not hot).As far as the wire working, see stupid and stubborn horse comment above; she would ignore the 0.5 joule chargers, and the 1.2 if she was in a bad mood (really wanted to take a beating) but - she does not ignore this thing. I normally use 3/8 in rubber hose for insulators, but this will burn through that hose; I have to wrap it in tape too. My jacket touched the wire one day, was damp out, and it felt like a mule had kicked me (through the hem of the jacket, not direct contact).NOTE: the new (and replacement) will get a bead of non-dry silicone on the box seam and terminals as a preventative measure. This is a top quality product. Very high joule output and extremely easy to install. This company has been producing this product for decades and it has berm a favorite for generations of our family. The only drawback is that the battery clip is NOT insulated and no insulation was included. An easy solution is to wrap multiple layers of electrical tape around the clip to prevent being shocked when you attach or disconnect the clip. This thing works great. I have it connected to a battery bank, charged by a solar panel. It output voltage is much higher than other fencers. I could hear an audible 'snap' when one of our lamb touched it while grazing. Spotted a black bear near the pasture a few days ago. I believe this unit delivers enough voltage to deter a bear too. Our pasture is small. 1/2 of an acre. The furthest point away from the ground connection I measured 10,500 Volts with my digital fence tester. We have shallow ground (12 - 16 inch deep soil) before limestone. For a ground rod, I used a 10 foot piece of 1/2" copper pipe. Dug a trench 10 feet long, and 16" deep (bedrock) and lay the pipe horizontally. I ran 3 strands of fencing wire,,, the yellow plastic type, with 3 aluminum conductors,,, about 1800 feet of wire. The meter on the front of the unit is helpful, showing the fence status. With 1800ft of wire, the fence status is almost at the max position, meaning very strong, high voltage. I run the bottom wire 6-8 inches from the ground,,, I see some grass touching it,, but am still getting 10.5 KV furthest from ground. You should see the lamb leap in the air when they 'take a hit'.its alot cheaper and easier to replace items like solar panel or battery using 12v, i have a 40w solar panel and a car battery hooked up, just the solar panel alone runs the fencer! i love it so much im getting another one for my other garden! keeps deer out nicely! Parmak does have 12v solar setups all in one but they are 3 times the price of this one! im very happy with this item! When I first purchased this unit I noted the poor reviews on Amazon stemmed from people who ran their fencer while charging the battery... when the manufacturer specifically says don't do this.Well.. 3 years later and my fencer is toast. Perhaps because I charged the battery earlier that day, carried it across the yard, and hooked it up to the fencer (resting voltage too high?)... never been a problem before. It worked when I connected the battery, but a couple hours later it was dead. Turn it on, the fencer charges for a single shock, but won't discharge until the switch is turned back off.But I notice in that time that the price has nearly DOUBLED, and they've cheapened out by removing the on/off switch. My other fence, running on a Gallagher fencer, has been going strong for 8+ years, AND I can charge the battery with a solar panel while the fencer is running. I know where my money will be going in the future.12vot battery last for ever it a deep cycle battery and its been on there for two moths 24hours a day. We us it for pigs and they respected it .Arrived on time, solid unit, easy to set up and install, I love the built-in meter and switch. I have only had this installed for a few weeks but it is working great for a solar powered setup in a remote area for a beeyard. It is powered by a marine battery I picked up at Canadian Tire which is charged by a solar panel.
